Out with the embellished bags and in with the vintage-inspired ladylike bags!

Replacing the large heavily studded bags of recent years are the simple and elegant bags of half a century ago.  The ladylike style of the 50’s and 60’s bags offers a great complement to the longer length 50’s style skirts being turned out in pinstripes and plaids.  These are the bags carried by gloved hands in the middle of the last century.

This elegant bag has caught much attention in the fashion industry decades ago when Grace Kelly used her crocodile Hermes handbag to hide her pregnant tummy from the press.  Shortly after her wedding to Prince Rainer of Monaco, fashion-conscious women everywhere were suddenly seen with princess-inspired purses. From then on it has become a fashion status symbol in the 50’s and Hermes Birkin has devoted a line that is similar to Kelly’s bag.

According to Ken Downing, the fashion director of Neiman Marcus, the new direction for handbags this season is a return to a structured, ladylike handbag with sharp tailoring and appreciation for men’s tailored details.  These bags go well with just about everything in the closet from an ordinary corporate day to an evening dinner.  These bags can go with jeans and cocktail dresses.  They are indeed very much versatile balanced with sophistication.

Many of the world’s most renowned designers like Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton, Celine and Prada have the ladybags as their latest options.  Today’s versions have a larger room for all your daily essentials, they are modernized with cell phone pockets, sleek hardware and mixed materials.

The bags carry an overall tone of polish, crafted in leather or texture-rich materials.  It’s now more about the leather than the busy embellishments and the complicated hardware.  It’s cleaner and simpler, supporting the philosophy “less is more”.  Even the color palette is softer with the soft hues of yellows, blues, greens and more neutral colors.  Everything is just a little bit muted.

Keeping up with the rise of the minimalist look, these bags appear to be a little more conservative and traditional.  They are a good investment because they are less showy and more subtle.  In short, they are a classic, an asset that can transcend time.

Their simple styles have become more accessible for a wider range of people, from celebrities in a press conference to young professionals walking down the city streets.  These simple styled bags are not necessarily boring though.  They have interesting character and exotic leathers that are remarkably appealing.  We’ll be seeing more of the Boho spirit on the runways.

Inside the big ladybag is a chic, envelope-style no-strap clutch that you may tuck under your arm during the day.  And yes, these clutches of the fall 2010 are also made of pure leather.  Say goodbye to your old sequins and satin fabrics and hello to your new ladylike bags and clutches.
